  9.      zmore - file perusal filter for crt  viewing  of  compressed
  10.      text

  12. SYNOPSIS
  13.      zmore [ name ...  ]

  15. DESCRIPTION
  16.      _Z_m_o_r_e is a filter which allows examination of compressed  or
  17.      plain text files one screenful at a time on a soft-copy ter-
  18.      minal.  _z_m_o_r_e works on files compressed with _c_o_m_p_r_e_s_s,  _p_a_c_k
  19.      or _g_z_i_p, and also on uncompressed files.  If a file does not
  20.      exist, _z_m_o_r_e looks for a file of  the  same  name  with  the
  21.      addition of a .gz, .z or .Z suffix.

  23.      _Z_m_o_r_e normally pauses  after  each  screenful,  printing  --
  24.      More--  at the bottom of the screen.  If the user then types
  25.      a carriage return, one more line is displayed.  If the  user
  26.      hits  a space, another screenful is displayed.  Other possi-
  27.      bilities are enumerated later.

  29.      _Z_m_o_r_e looks in the file /_e_t_c/_t_e_r_m_c_a_p to  determine  terminal
  30.      characteristics,  and  to determine the default window size.
  31.      On a terminal capable of displaying 24  lines,  the  default
  32.      window  size  is  22  lines.   To use a pager other than the
  33.      default _m_o_r_e, set environment variable PAGER to the name  of
  34.      the desired program, such as _l_e_s_s.

  36.      Other sequences which may be typed when  _z_m_o_r_e  pauses,  and
  37.      their  effects,  are  as  follows  (_i is an optional integer
  38.      argument, defaulting to 1) :

  40.      _i<space>
  41.           display _i more lines, (or another screenful if no argu-
  42.           ment is given)

  44.      ^D   display 11 more lines (a ``scroll'').  If _i  is  given,
  45.           then the scroll size is set to _i.

  47.      d    same as ^D (control-D)
  48.  
  49.      _iz   same as typing a  space  except  that  _i,  if  present,
  50.           becomes the new window size.  Note that the window size
  51.           reverts back to the default at the end of  the  current
  52.           file.

  56.      _if   skip _i screenfuls and print a screenful of lines

  77.           When the prompt --More--(Next file: _f_i_l_e)  is  printed,
  78.           this command causes zmore to exit.

  80.      s    When the prompt --More--(Next file: _f_i_l_e)  is  printed,
  81.           this  command  causes  zmore  to skip the next file and
  82.           continue.

  84.      =    Display the current line number.

  86.      _i/expr
  87.           search for the _i-th occurrence of the  regular  expres-
  88.           sion  _e_x_p_r.  If the pattern is not found, _z_m_o_r_e goes on
  89.           to the next file (if any).  Otherwise, a  screenful  is
  90.           displayed,  starting  two  lines before the place where
  91.           the expression was found.  The user's  erase  and  kill
  92.           characters  may be used to edit the regular expression.
  93.           Erasing back past the first column cancels  the  search
  94.           command.

  96.      _in   search for the _i-th  occurrence  of  the  last  regular
  97.           expression entered.

  100.           invoke a shell with _c_o_m_m_a_n_d. The character `!' in "com-
  101.           mand"  are  replaced  with  the previous shell command.
  102.           The sequence "\!" is replaced by "!".

  104.      :q or :Q
  105.           quit reading the current file; go on to  the  next  (if
  106.           any) (same as q or Q).

  108.      .    (dot) repeat the previous command.

  110.      The commands take effect immediately, i.e., it is not neces-
  111.      sary  to  type  a  carriage return.  Up to the time when the
  112.      command character itself is given, the user may hit the line
  113.      kill  character  to  cancel  the  numerical  argument  being
  114.      formed.  In addition, the user may hit the  erase  character
  115.      to redisplay the --More-- message.

  117.      At any time when output is being sent to the  terminal,  the
  118.      user  can hit the quit key (normally control-\).  _Z_m_o_r_e will
  119.      stop sending output, and will  display  the  usual  --More--
  120.      prompt.   The  user may then enter one of the above commands
  121.      in the normal manner.  Unfortunately, some  output  is  lost
  122.      when this is done, due to the fact that any characters wait-
  123.      ing in the terminal's output queue are flushed when the quit
  124.      signal occurs.

  140.      The terminal is set to _n_o_e_c_h_o mode by this program  so  that
  141.      the  output  can be continuous.  What you type will thus not
  142.      show on your terminal, except for the / and !  commands.

  144.      If the standard output is not a teletype,  then  _z_m_o_r_e  acts
  145.      just  like _z_c_a_t, except that a header is printed before each
  146.      file.
